I have just send a proposal for a release goal to lenny. I'd like to swtich to GRUB2 as default boot-loader for amd64 and i386. This would allow us to, finally, drop GRUB completely.

GRUB has too many patches, right now, and is a maintainence hell since upstream setted it on legacy mode hence only accepting bugfixing. Major of distributions divert its code (Debian included) to support fency features like graphical splash and like what makes our patch queue too big and making difficult to maintain. However, GRUB2 is being actively maintained and has some neat features.

The new GRUB (GRUB2) has multi-architecture support and is highly modular allowing us to improve it while continuing to receive upstream support.

Let's see what the Release Team has to say about it :-D

Re: Proposed release goal: Switch to GRUB2 as default boot-loader

Hm, is GRUB2 (in unstable) already stable enough to be usable? Without much quirks and hacks? See http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-2-faq.en.html#TOCq2 ;)

Re: Proposed release goal: Switch to GRUB2 as default boot-loader

Yes, it's doing very well.

Of course we'll catch some regressions but this doesn't mean we cannot solve them. Other important aspect to have in mind is that it's being actively developed by its developers allowing us to get things solved much faster and without needing to divert from its code anymore.

Re: Proposed release goal: Switch to GRUB2 as default boot-loader

Nice, maybe I'll give it a try... Is there any documentation of the upgrade-path? Or just apt-get install grub2, grub2-install /dev/sda, update-grub2? ;) Seems upstream has not yet any docs online - maybe this would be a nice topic for the Debian-Wiki?

There's no documentation about it yet but you're guessing right. It's transparent for the enduser.

We'll be putting a wiki page about it in next comming days.

I would also like to see that, please keep us updated. I came to your site as a user on ubuntuforums asked the same for Ubuntu. Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=423044 So let us know of any updates :)

Great. Would be nice if Ubuntu team could help us to catch it.

I saw on the forum a user talking about .deb for it. We already have it on sid for a while. :-)
